A high quality celebration of the rich history of metal logos
When you're met with the morbidly beautiful black and white drawings of various assortments of devils, demons, snakes and goats by Daniel Corcuera on the cover and a dripping, gothic logotype spelling out "Logos from Hell" you should know what to expect. But as they say, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
Extreme metal artwork and logo type extraordinaire Mark Riddick has compiled and curated this collection of heavy metal band logos from various layers of the international metal scene. In Logos from Hell Riddick showcases the choice works of several artists, both legendary and obscure, from all corners of the world. Among the more prominent artists featured are Christopher Horst, Mike Majewski, Matt "Putrid" Carr and Christophe Szpajdel.

Other than examples of the featured artists' work, each artist entry is accompanied by a short interview examining their individual backgrounds as artists and their relationship with band logos. It serves mostly just as a reference book for cool metal logos, and if that's all you're expecting that's great, but I feel as though I'm wanting more depth in the actual thought process from the artists. Looking at the evolution of Away's VOIVOD logo through the years is a blast, and Riddick's brief examination of what makes logos stand out depending on style is an interesting read.
Doomentia Press has managed another high quality publication. The printing in itself is sharp and spot on, with the black and white hardcover standing out among similar books. As someone interested in metal logos I've had a lot of fun flipping through Logos from Hell, but there's not much reading to be done or information to absorb.
